Divorce: An Unfortunate, Potentially Devastating Consequence of Unlearned Interpersonal Skills

We aren’t happy about it, but much of the work we do with families involves helping them navigate the process of divorce without damaging their children or destroying their relationships with one another.
So much of what we see couples doing to one another could be avoided completely. When we work with parents, we keep this in mind: By teaching effective and intelligent parenting, we can help prevent much of the turmoil adults experience later in life by raising children who are well-adjusted and emotionally intelligent.
Does it surprise you that divorce prevention can begin at home when children are young?
Firstly, a healthy, emotionally intelligent marriage requires two people who are comfortable in their own skin. That is to say, they know themselves well, have a healthy, intact self-concept, and are not overly dependent on others to determine how they feel about themselves.
This may sound easy, but many adults have not developed these attributes, which are important for forming a union that can withstand the day-to-day stresses of family life and endure long after the children have left home.
Secondly, as children, we need to see strong conflict-resolution skills modeled and reinforced in different ways.
In all marriages, there will be inevitable conflict. How we handle that conflict helps determine how happy we are. There are effective ways to deal with an angry spouse, and there are approaches that can create chaos. Too often, we choose the latter because of what our inner voice is telling us.
Thirdly, communication is a main ingredient of a healthy marriage.
We are often taught as children to expect certain things from people without clearly communicating those expectations first. That mistake contributes to silent treatments, hurt feelings, and divorce proceedings.
If couples sought relationship education before getting married, they could have a better chance of success. When there is any sign of trouble, they should consider seeking a marriage coach or family therapist to help them understand the underlying reasons for ongoing conflict.
Understanding what constitutes a healthy marriage is key to building one. Seeking help while the marriage is still strong is an important step.
There are books on the subject, but reading something and then applying it isn’t always as easy as it sounds. Working with a neutral party, such as a marriage coach, can help couples prevent many of the circumstances that lead to wounded hearts.

Helping Parents of Teens Navigate the Muddy Waters of Adolescence

Of all the workshops we offer, we are especially gratified to help parents who feel they have lost their connection with their teens.
Sadly, many homes where teenagers live become battlegrounds unnecessarily.
Our Parenting Teens workshops give parents an entirely different perspective from which to approach these challenges. They learn how to create a more harmonious atmosphere, teach respect, and foster trust.
Parents also examine research on the teenage brain and the psychology behind adolescent behavior.
Best of all, they learn new ways to teach responsibility that can make a lasting difference.
In the long run, this workshop can provide your teenager with valuable life skills and help strengthen your family relationships.
